History of Westminster
More Than Six Decades of Tradition, Growth, and Excellence
Since 1962, Westminster School has grown from a small school into a thriving Pre-K through Middle School community grounded in classical education. Guided by only three Heads of School throughout its history, Westminster’s remarkable continuity of leadership reflects an enduring commitment to academic excellence, character, creativity, and joyful learning.

Westminster Timeline
1962–1971
Westminster School is located in a rental space at St. Albans Church on Columbia Pike in Annandale. The school begins with grades K–2 and gradually expands to include grades 3–8.
1971
Westminster School opens at 3819 Gallows Road with 14 classrooms and an office. What is now the back hall of the school served as the main hallway. Classes are also held in the Stone House, which housed the library during this time.
1973
A two-classroom addition is added.
1976
Mr. Glover becomes Mrs. Goll’s assistant. The drama program launches with the first play, The Emperor’s New Clothes, performed by the 4th grade.
1978
The gym is built.
1979
The CAC (Capital Athletic Conference) is created, and Westminster becomes a founding member.
1981

1985
The “Blue Wing” is added, creating new spaces for music, art, and the library.
1991
The Griffin Window, honoring Mrs. Goll, is created by Dr. Russell Libby.
1992
Mrs. Goll passes away.
2002
Groundbreaking begins for the Jane Goll Center for the Arts.
2003
The Jane Goll Center for the Arts opens, featuring a new gym, library, music room, orchestra room, and the renovation of the old gym into a theater. A new bell-tower entrance, lobby, and expanded parking lot are also completed.
2005
The Shakespeare windows are installed in the Skylight Corridor. The windows are created by Mr. Torne Shipman, who later joins Westminster School as Maintenance Supervisor.
2007
The garden area in front of the school is completed.
2009
Two acres of land are acquired with plans to build a new athletic field.
2010
The Griffin Academy Preschool is established and opens at 6800 Columbia Pike in Annandale, Virginia.
2012
Mr. Goll passes away.
2018
The Griffin Academy Preschool moves to the main school building.
2021
Mr. Glover retires, and Mrs. Schuler becomes Westminster’s third Head of School.
A dedicated STEAM makerspace is incorporated into the school building.
2022
Westminster celebrates its Diamond Jubilee — 60 years of excellence in education!
Plans to install a turf playing field and relocate the playground are revived as Westminster renews county permits for the project.
2026
Griffin Field, Playground Plaza, are completed.
